Columnist Takes Summer Vacation, Sort Of

Okay, so I’m a little behind in my writing. What do you expect? It’s summer. Everything changes in the summertime when the kids are home from school. For one thing, I consider sunflower seeds dinner because we’re usually at a ballgame. And another thing, I have fewer hours to write because my free time exists only when I’m sleeping with my warm and fluffy toy poodle wedged into my side.

When you visit the “Mishegas of Motherhood” website and click on the yellow notepad for the current column, you might notice the same old story a few weeks in a row, or I might surprise you and throw in something fresh. In fact, I’m working on a piece right now that’s tentatively titled, “How My Garden Grows.” It’s not that I’m procrastinating; I’m still waiting for the first roma tomato to ripen. My goal this summer is to make my own salsa before the deer eat all the cilantro.

Meanwhile, I encourage you to browse through the archives and read any of the 60-plus previously published articles, such as the one in May 2006 called, “Make Plans to Do Nothing This Summer,” which pretty much sums up my current mental status.

So, hang in there all you moms and dads whose kids want to stay up late for the fun of it and nag us to take them to Pirates of the Caribbean. Before we know it, school will be back in session, and we’ll wish we had a little more free time with our family to run barefoot in the backyard.

“Mishegas of Motherhood” is the creation of Ellie S. Grossman, a St. Louis freelance writer and stay-at-home-mom who never stays home. Her stories are inspired by the real life of her family, including her two children, toy poodle named Luci, and her husband, but not necessarily in that order. Feel free to send any comments, prayers or recipes to: ellie@mishegasofmotherhood.com or visit her new website at www.mishegasofmotherhood.com.
